Description

Mt Cargill to north of Ōtepoti | Dunedin summits at 676m. The 105m tower is the city’s tallest structure. These craggs are the eroded younger remains of the 1000m Dunedin Volcano that last erupted 10M yrs ago. Views extend over city & down coast to The Catlins; the full length of Otago Peninsula; & into Blueskin Bay/ north to Shag Point. Accessed from Mt Cargill Lookout, the 4km/ 1.5h return Organ Pipes Track leads to basalt columns formed during volcanic creation of the Dunedin area. Descend to Buttars Peak at 617m for more views then continue towards Mt Holmes at 575m. As you reach the latter, engage all-limb drive to ascend the columnar debris. Make your way through the scrub to discover more columns. NB. The Organ Pipes Track can also be accessed from Mt Cargill Rd, but the car park is small (3 cars will fill it). (Sep 2023)
